Perhaps you have heard that some of the most dramatic smile makeovers ever achieved have been built upon a foundation of porcelain veneers. Maybe you’ve read that your favorite movie star had his or her smile transformed by these thin shells of custom-crafted porcelain. Or possibly you just know someone who was recently fitted with veneers and are interested in learning more about how you could benefit from this remarkable cosmetic dentistry treatment.

Whatever the case, you’ve come to the right place. At Contemporary Dental Arts P.C., Dr. Lauren J. Shanard has helped countless patients reinvent their smiles with beautifully customized porcelain veneers. Dr. Shanard painstakingly designs her porcelain veneers so that they complement her patients’ surrounding natural teeth in terms of their size, shape, color, and even texture. As a result, patients emerge with stunning smiles that appear perfectly natural and healthy, and never artificial or “too” perfect.

One of the reasons that the vast majority of porcelain veneer procedures are so successful is that experienced cosmetic dentists such as Dr. Shanard place veneers only on the most qualified candidates. At her cosmetic dentistry practice in Williston, porcelain veneer candidates are carefully evaluated in order to ensure that they are well suited to the treatment. If they are not good candidates for porcelain veneers, then Dr. Shanard recommends an alternative treatment that will produce similarly excellent results.

Are porcelain veneers right for you - and are you right for porcelain veneers? The only way to find out for sure is to meet with Dr. Shanard at her office for a one-on-one consultation at your earliest convenience.

Who is and is not a good candidate for porcelain veneers?

Fortunately, most patients who are interested in porcelain veneers turn out to be good candidates for the treatment. Porcelain veneers are an excellent cosmetic treatment that can be used to conceal a variety of aesthetic flaws in the front teeth. If you suffer from any of the following visible imperfections in the front teeth, you may be a good candidate for porcelain veneers:

  • Staining and other discoloration
  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Teeth that are inconsistent in size or shape
  • Teeth that are separated by small gaps
  • Inconsistencies in length
  • Teeth that are slightly crooked

In order to be fitted with porcelain veneers, however, you must have reasonable expectations of the treatment and understand that the treatment is irreversible. Once you have had porcelain veneers placed, your teeth will always require porcelain veneers. This is because, prior to the placement of veneers, a tiny but significant amount of enamel must be removed from the surfaces of the teeth. If your veneers become dislodged or wear out their normal lifespan of approximately a decade, your “naked” teeth will no longer be aesthetically pleasing or functional.

You must also be in good oral health, free from tooth decay and gum disease, in order to be a good candidate for porcelain veneers.
